Medicaid managed care plans, health systems, and states are teaming up with community-based organizations and housing authorities to consider a wide variety of supportive housing initiatives. Research indicates that doing so not only improves health outcomes for individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health, and/or substance use disorders, but also reduces utilization of emergency room services, inpatient bed days, and community justice involvement.

The trainer, Dorothy Colby, is a Certified Positive Approach to Dementia Care (TM) Trainer and national mentor, with more than 20 years of professional and personal experience caring for people with dementia. She is Administrator for Hale Ku’ike Memory Care Home in Nu’uanu, where she also trains staff. Positive Approach to Care (TM) seminars, developed by occupational therapist Teepa Snow, provide essential information for families and care partners on how to have a positive and meaningful relationship with loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia throughout their journey.

The GEMS™ workshop offers an overview Teepa Snow’s dementia classification model (developed from the basic structure of Allen Cognitive Disability Levels) . The GEMS model compares different states of being and ability to the characteristics of precious jewels. This dignified metaphor defines normal aging as well as the many appearances, behavioral changes, skill sets and needs of those living with the effects of neurocognitive failure (dementia) or other brain changes. They should be considered indicators and a guide toward understanding an individual’s current state of ability and brain function. Rachael Wonderlin has a Master’s degree in Gerontology and she is the author of When Someone You Know is Living in a Dementia Care Community: Words to Say and Things to Do, published by Johns Hopkins University Press. She is a dementia care consultant based in Philadelphia, PA., and has been working with older adults for over ten years. She travels around the country for speaking engagements, caregiver trainings, and family consultations. Ms. Wonderlin is currently writing her second book for JHU Press.

Todd Pang has a Master’s degree in Business Administration and he is Vice President and Administrator of Caring Manoa – a family-owned and operated Type II Adult Residential Care Home with Expanded Care. Mr. Pang has managed Caring Manoa for seven years, and he is currently expanding services to new locations.

Ms. Wonderlin is the inaugural Caring Manoa Expert in Residence. She will be providing support to our island community from June 3rd to 18th, 2018. Private consultations are available, please inquire at for details and pricing.

This web seminar will provide participants with practical tips on creating and maintaining a coordinated community response (CCR) to address issues of elder abuse and financial exploitation. Attendees will learn strategies to bridge common gaps seen between senior service providers, victim advocates at community-based organizations, and other partners involved in the response to survivors of abuse later in life. In addition to providing a blueprint for building comprehensive coalitions to address crimes against older adults in a holistic way, this presentation will offer tips on how to ensure the sustainability of a coordinated community response.
