HIPAA Compliance Made Easy for Hawaii Healthcare Professionals @ The Pacific Club
Feb 23 @ 8:00 am – 9:30 am

This course is a part of Hawaii Tech Support’s “Security for Health Professionals” Brunch & Learn series, designed exclusively for healthcare front and back office staff, as well as compliance and risk management personnel. Join us for breakfast at The Pacific Club, and enjoy your food while we present.

The purpose of this presentation is to increase participants’ understanding of organizational requirements and measures to meet the cyber and information security goals of HIPAA, including HITECH, Omnibus, and the Final Rules. The course helps participants understand how a corporate culture can be encouraged at all levels of the organization to help ensure compliance and protect from breaches and the repercussions associated with the spillage of protected information. The goals of this presentation are:

  • To define HIPAA as it relates to cyber and information security, including administrative, physical, and technical safeguards.
  • To review current US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) guidance, Office of Civil Rights (OCR) enforcement, and common practices for meeting requirements.
  • To introduce participants to management tools offered by The Compliancy Group, a Hawaii Tech Support partner. Management tools are used for verifying and managing policies, procedures, and documentation required for HIPAA compliance.
  • To provide information on freely available checklists, tools, and programs that will help any covered entity (CE) in the management of their organization’s HIPAA compliance programs.

This 90-minute course provides healthcare professionals already familiar with HIPAA a deeper understanding of the threats and mitigation strategies available to CEs. Examples of real-world breaches and penalties will be covered. Also covered will be the root causes, how regulators connected the penalties to the rules, and what organizations can do to avoid a similar fate. The course also highlights useful resources and sources of data for indicators. As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to provide more effective outreach to their organizations on issues of compliance.

The presenter, Timothy Ames, serves with Hawaii Tech Support as a security consultant and architect of its compliance and cybersecurity programs. His many industry certifications include Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker (C|EH), Cisco Certified Networking and Security Professional (CCNP/CCSP), and Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE). He is well versed in governance and compliance, to include DISA STIG, FFIEC, PCI-DSS, HIPAA, and SP 800-171 (DFARS).
