NOTE: The $60 fee covers ONLY the cost of the tour. This does not include any ground transportation or airfare.
Please join us for a field trip to Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Moloka‘i. This Perspectives on Community Health trip will focus on learning about Kalaupapa’s past and present. Using that knowledge, we will begin a conversation about planning a Wellness Day event for the community. As a note, children under the age of 16 are not allowed to enter the park and will be unable to participate in this event.
It is up to you how you want to access the park (by foot or plane), but we encourage you to join us for the hike in and out along the Pali Trail (hike down at 8:30 am and hike out around 3:00 pm). The trail requires about an hour and consists of stepped switch-backs, so bring walking sticks if you have weak knees! The views along the trail are spectacular and not to be missed! If you decide to hike with us we can coordinate rides from the airport to the trailhead in the morning. Please plan meet at the airport no later than 8 am.
Once we reach the peninsula we will join Damien Tours for a one-of-a-kind scenic and historic bus tour of Kalawao and Kalaupapa Settlements. The tour is four hours long (10 am – 2 pm) and stops at many points of interest across the peninsula. This tour company is operated by Gloria Marks, a resident of Kalaupapa. Gloria and her late husband, Richard Marks, created the tour out of a deep respect for telling the history of Kalaupapa, Hawaiian History, and the involvement of the Church. There is a $60 fee particpate in this field trip to cover the cost of the tour.
After we have learned a bit about the current settlement and the powerful history of the peninsula, we will meet with the Park Superintendent and other National Park Service staff for a Talk-Story session to begin generating ideas and identifying resources for planning a Wellness Day with the park staff, patients, and residents.
Deadline to register is March 15, 2017.
For those planning to attend from other islands, you will need to arrange your own airfare. Here are some options we have viewed that may be helpful in planning your itinerary.
Molokai has two airports – Hoolehua (MKK) and Kalaupapa-Topside (LUP). Both Makani Kai Air flies to both MKK and LUP, while Mokulele only flies to MKK. Please select the best option that fits in with your time frame and budget.
If you fly into MKK, you will need to ride from the airport to the Pali trail. Once we have a headcount, we will do our best to coordinate ride sharing to and from the trailhead. From there, you will hike down to the peninsula. We recommend you allocate about 1-1.5 hours to hike down and have a moderate level of physical fitness (the trail is steep and not for beginners). Our staff will be hiking down at about 8:30 AM and hiking back around 3:00 PM. Flights should arrive into MKK by 8:00 AM and depart after 5:00 PM.
If you fly into LUP, you will need to walk into the town from the airport. It is about 1.5 miles from the airport and is flat, level terrain. You will want to arrive into town by 10 AM for the tour. The talk-story session is scheduled to end around 3:00 PM.
