Nutrition and Dementia

Course Description
According to the Alzheimer's Association, 6.5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's. That equates to about 1 in 9 individuals age 65 and older having Alzheimer's. With the substantial presence and impact of Alzheimer's and other dementias on our kupuna, it is important that we, as healthcare providers, increase our knowledge of the syndrome and are prepared to meet the needs of these individuals.
The changes that dementia brings can present many dining challenges for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Changes in visual perception, fine motor abilities, and increased aspiration risk can make it harder for a person to get adequate nutrition and hydration. Understanding the changes in the brain that cause these challenges can help caregivers make positive modifications to help make dining more pleasurable and safer for the person they are caring for.
This webinar will address:
Visual, verbal and physical interaction skills to optimize engagement in meals
Interventions to support meals and drinks that provide pleasure and interest
Ways to address concerns regarding late life care and end of life support when eating and drinking are becoming no longer safe or desired.
The webinar will be recorded and made available on the HAH website for on-demand viewing within one week of the live webinar date.
Speaker
Dorothy A. Colby
Dorothy Arriola Colby is a Certified Positive Approach to Care™ Trainer, Coach, Consultant, Engagement Leader and Mentor. She is also a Hawaii Alzheimer's Disease Initiative Memory Care Navigator, Dementia Friends Master Trainer & Champion, and Rosslyn Carter Institute Dealing with Dementia Trainer. She is a dementia care specialist with more than 20 years of professional and personal experience in caring for people with dementia. Dorothy is the Director of Community Engagement at Hale Ku’ike, residential dementia care facilities in Nuuanu, Kaneohe and Pali.
Dorothy was born in Hawaii, raised in Hauula on the island of Oahu. After graduating from St. Andrew's Priory School in Honolulu, Dorothy attended Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, completing her master's degree there. Dorothy has a very personal connection to dementia care: her grandmother, with whom she grew up, had Alzheimer's disease; her father had stroke-related dementia; and her father-in-law had Parkinson's-related dementia. She has worked at Hale Ku'ike since 2005, helping residents with dementia and their families to navigate through the course of the disease.
Dorothy's mission is to help families understand what is happening to the brain of their loved ones who have dementia. Through her work at Hale Ku'ike and her public dementia education classes, Dorothy helps those who work with and care for people with dementia to understand the process of brain failure. By understanding that the brain is dying, we can empathize, adjust our approach and expectations, and be able to connect and communicate with those who have dementia.
