PSUD Module 1: Caring for Pregnant and Postpartum People with Substance Use Disorder



Overview

This training is designed to help people understand Substance Use Disorder as a chronic disease and the impact that it has on maternal health, how to care for pregnant and postpartum people with Substance Use Disorder, etc. Training content incorporates cultural values and community perspectives that are unique to Hawai‘i.

    • Examine the neurobiology of addiction and its impact of addiction on maternal health in the U.S. and in Hawaiʻi.

    • Explore the intricate connections between biology, psychology and social factors in the development, progression and recovery from substance use disorders.

    • Identify strategies to develop trust and reduce stigma associated with pregnant or postpartum patients with substance use disorder.

    • Identify evidence-based tools and resources for screening and referral of pregnant and postpartum persons with substance use disorder.


Target Audience

This training was developed for a multidisciplinary group of professionals including but not limited to medical providers (physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners), nurses, social workers, crisis line workers, first-responders, and non-clinical staff.

Continuing Education

 

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Hawai‘i Pacific Health (HPH) and the Healthcare Association of Hawai‘i (HAH).  Hawai‘i Pacific Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Hawai‘i Pacific Health designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for physicians.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Hawai‘i Pacific Health designates this live activity for 1.0 contact hours for nurses.  Nurses should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  

 
 

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Hawai‘i Pacific Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Hawai‘i Pacific Health maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 continuing education credits.

Continuing education credit is valid through 12/31/2024.
