The Healthcare Association of Hawaii is pleased to host our 7th Annual American Health Care Association & National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) Quality & Regulatory Workshop!

We’ve got a great lineup for you, inclusive of topics relevant to Nursing Facilities, Assisted Living Facilities and Type II Adult Residential Care Homes. This year we welcome three (3) key national leaders in long term care who will cover topics ranging from regulatory compliance and reimbursement strategies to care planning and workforce issues.

Day 1 focuses on SNF-specific topics and Day 2 is geared toward SNF and ALF/ARCH Type II settings. With engaging discussions, group interactions, and sharing of updates and best practices, this workshop is designed to bring you and your team up to date on the latest requirements and trends and give you an opportunity to connect and network.

Participants in the workshop will be able to:

  • Recognize updates to regulatory guidance for LTC providers

  • Examine survey trends and mitigation strategies

  • Identify reimbursement strategies for nursing facilities

  • Explore continuity of care through the care planning process

  • Identify infection prevention and control updates and best practices

  • Discuss leadership’s role in recruitment and retention

SPEAKERS

 

David Gifford, MD, MPH
Chief Medical Officer
American Health Care Association

David Gifford, MD, MPH is a geriatrician who currently serves as Chief Medical Officer at the American Health Care Association (AHCA). He helped create the Quality Department at AHCA, which assists providers in their quality improvement efforts and works with administration officials on regulations and policies impacting the profession. He also established the Center for Health Policy and evaluation in LTC at AHCA and currently oversees AHCA’s Long Term Care Data Cooperative, a National Institute of Aging funded initiative to link EMR data from nursing homes to help improve care. Dr. Gifford also serves on the Board of the Baldrige Foundation and chairs the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs Geriatric and Gerontology Advisory Committee, a congressional chartered committee to advise the U.S. Secretary of Veteran’s Affairs on geriatric services for veterans.

He is a former Director of the Rhode Island State Department of Health from 2005 to 2011, where he received the National Governor’s Distinguished Service Award for State Officials for his management of the H1N1 influenza outbreak. Prior to that, he served as Chief Medical Officer for Quality Partners of Rhode Island, where he directed the CMS national nursing home-based quality improvement effort.  He holds a faculty appointment at Brown University Medical School and School of Public Health and served as medical director in several nursing homes in Rhode Island. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and conducted his geriatric fellowship at UCLA, where he also earned his Master’s in Public Health while a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar.

 

 

Holly Harmon, RN, MBA, LNHA, FACHCA
Senior Vice President of Quality, Regulatory & Clinical Services
American Health Care Association

Holly Harmon, RN, MBA, LNHA, FACHCA brings both passion and a wealth of practical, real-world, clinical and operational experience to her role as Senior Vice President, Quality, Regulatory & Clinical Services at American Health Care Association (AHCA). Her extensive service in a wide array of settings including post-acute care, long term care, residential care, assisted living, independent living, a psychiatric hospital and occupational health have provided her with insights, knowledge, skills and innovative ideas which she exuberantly shares with others.

 At AHCA she oversees the quality, regulatory and clinical efforts. In this role, she has led AHCA’s national quality initiative that identified national priority goals and developed tools and resources for providers to achieve these goals.  She designed and launched AHCA’s infection preventionist certificate program, that has trained over 4,000 individuals nationally. In addition, she coordinates the development of staff training modules in AHCA’s online learning management system, which includes training of over 200,000 individuals as temporary nurse assistants during the pandemic. She also led AHCA’s advocacy and feedback to CMS and CDC on how clinical guidance needs to pay attention to the resident’s quality of life and gained meaningful changes in guidance for those who live and work in long term care.

 In addition to her vast clinical experience, Ms. Harmon has put her dynamic energy into leading the statewide Maine Culture Change Coalition/LANE as President, the Maine Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes as Co-Chair, Vice-President of American College of Health Care Administrators, Maine Chapter and the Maine LANE Co-Convener for the national Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes Campaign. She also served as the Director of Quality Improvement & Regulatory Affairs at the Maine Health Care Association.  She currently serves on the Steering Committee of the national Moving Forward Coalition and on the Exam Committee for the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards.

 She puts her boundless energy and warm and energetic personality into training, education and presenting both, nationally and locally. She has made simplifying the complex world of long term and post-acute care policy and practice an art.

 

 

Crystal Bowens, DPH, MSN, RN
Vice President of Regulatory and Clinical Services
American Health Care Association

Crystal Bowens, DPH, MSN, RN is currently the Vice President of Regulatory and Clinical Services for ACHA. She has served in the healthcare industry since 1996 in various roles and has dedicated the past 15 years of her career to the post-acute care sector. While serving in both C-Suite and executive leadership positions, she has gained extensive experience in strategic planning, regulatory compliance, system and process improvement, and development of care innovations to promote positive patient outcomes. Crystal’s educational background has prepared her for the challenges in today’s healthcare arena. Even though Crystal started her nursing career off in acute care as a bedside nurse, she quickly realized her passion was in the post-acute arena with a desire to drive change on a larger scale. This drive led Crystal toward obtaining her Master of Science in Nursing degree, as well as a Master of Health Administration. She did not stop there; Crystal completed her Doctor of Healthcare Administration in 2019. She also holds board certification in gerontology, is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, and a Project Management Professional. Her goal is to use her knowledge and experience to promote quality care for seniors.

As recognition for her strong commitment and positive contributions to the post-acute care sector, Crystal was inducted in the 2019 McKnight’s Women of Distinction Hall of Honor.


CONTINUING EDUCATION

To receive a Continuing Education Certificate each individual must pay the registration fee, attend the workshop, and complete the corresponding HAH evaluation. Credit is awarded commensurate with participation; SNF participants must attend both days and ALF/ARCH participants must attend Day 2. Certificates will be issued via email within 30 days of completion of the evaluation.

Available for participation at the live workshop only: This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Oregon Nurses Association, an accredited approver of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation for up to11.25 nursing contact hours. Approval valid through 02/23/2025. OCEAN ID #2023-02.

State licensure boards have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses. Dr. David Gifford, Holly Harmon, Crystal Bowens and the planners of this educational activity have no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to disclose.


LOCATION

This workshop will be held at the Ala Moana Hotel located at 410 Atkinson Dr. in Honolulu, HI, 96814. The training will be in the Garden Lanai Room, on the 2nd floor above the lobby.

Parking validation (8 hours) for self-parking in the hotel parking garage will be provided. Valet parking is the responsibility of the individual and costs $35 per vehicle.

  • Buffet-style lunch

  • Snack and beverages at the afternoon break

Workshop Registration: $270 per person
Day 2 only (available to ALF/ARCH members only): $150 per person
