Course Description

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed weaknesses in infection prevention and control (IPC) practices in healthcare settings across the nation and beyond. As we move through recovery, our long term care facilities are committed to strengthening IPC programs for the health and safety of residents and staff. Join us for this 3-part webinar series as we examine key elements of infection prevention and control and discuss best practices for long term care.

PART 1: SURVEILLANCE AND ANTIBIOTIC STEWARDSHIP
July 14, 2021 from 11 am - noon HST

In this session, participants will:

  • Identify the key components of the McGeer criteria for infection surveillance in long term care

  • Examine how to incorporate McGeer criteria into your infection prevention and control program

  • Recognize how to calculate accurate infection rates

  • Describe the facility’s role related to antibiotic stewardship


PART 2: THE TEAM APPROACH TO INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL
August 11, 2021 from 11 am - noon HST

In this session, participants will:

  • Describe the role of the infection preventionist

  • Discuss a team approach to infection prevention and control

  • Validate the effectiveness of your infection prevention and control program

PART 3: MULTI-DRUG RESISTANT ORGANISMS (MDROs)
September 8, 2021 from 11 am - noon HST

In this session, participants will:

  • Identify MDROs currently found in Hawaii

  • Compare and contrast the difference between infection and colonization

  • Recognize when isolation precautions are necessary

Administrators, Executive Directors, Directors of Nursing, Quality RNs, Staff Educators, Nurse Leaders, Therapists, Interdisciplinary Department Heads and other long term care staff who are responsible for infection prevention and control and resident safety.

Linda Spaulding, RN, CIC

Linda Spaulding is the CEO and founder of InCo and Associates International. She has devoted the last 30 years educating both health care workers and the general public on the importance of infection prevention. Currently, Linda consults not only with ambulatory surgery centers, long term care, and acute care facilities, but also other disciplines such as police, fire rescue and dental in the development of strong, evidence-based infection prevention programs and practices. She is a certified DNV GL Hospital Accreditation Surveyor and manages the DNV GL Hospital Managing Infections Risks Certification Program. She holds a Lead Auditor Healthcare Certificate for ISO 9001-2015.

Linda has been the principal investigator in over 60 outbreaks. Having published many articles related to infection prevention, Linda has also developed multiple education programs on a variety of topics. She developed a series of training programs for Japan to implement infection control programs into their local hospitals. She has written elearning programs for organizations in the U.S. including Fortune 500 companies as well as Africa, India, and Ireland. Over the last 14 years, Linda has provided consultation for Emergency Management for acute and long term care facilities, working closely with the Emergency Management teams in Hawaii, Florida, and New Mexico.
