Avoiding UTIs: Preventing Urinary Tract Infections in Long Term Care
Course Description
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common infection in long term care (LTC) facilities in the United States. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has quality measures for nursing facilities specific to UTIs; these quality measures have an impact on a facility’s 5-Star Rating on Nursing Home Compare.
Join us as we take a closer look at associated risk factors and complications with UTIs, along with an overview of UTI quality measures and documentation. We will learn best practices for decreasing UTIs and catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs) and examine the use of antibiotics in long term care, discussing the risks and benefits for our residents.

Speaker
Rebecca O’Brien is a Registered Nurse with 27 years of clinical experience in various settings to include: Medical Surgical, House Supervisor, Infection Prevention, Quality Director, Performance Improvement and Risk Management, focusing on Critical Access Hospitals. Rebecca works at the Healthcare Association of Hawaii in the role of Improvement Advisor with the Premier Hospital Innovation and Improvement Network (HIIN) of the national Partnership for Patients initiative, where she has served since 2016. Rebecca is the subject matter expert (SME) in catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) at Premier. She has nine years of Quality Improvement expertise and is recognized as a Certification Professional of Healthcare Quality.
